Brief Bio:

Kathleen Woodward, Professor of English, has served as Director of the Simpson Center for the Humanities at the University of Washington since 2000. Her research interests include the broad crossdisciplinary domains of technology and culture, the emotions, and women and aging. In January 2015 she was awarded a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for a four-year program--Reimagining the Humanities Ph.D--that addresses the need to take scholarship and teaching in the humanities to broader publics; building bridges between the University of Washington and the three two-year colleges in the Seattle District is one of the major components of the program. In February 2013 she finished raising $2.5 million to support an annual program of summer fellowships for UW faculty members and doctoral students at the University of Washington's Simpson Center, with thanks to a National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge Grant, a grant from the Mellon Foundation, and gifts from many, many donors. All the funds are being directed to an endowment for the Digital Humanities Commons which will support an annual visiting speaker and learning opportunities for doctoral students as well as the fellowships. Faculty and students will be encouraged to apply in clusters to engage in collaborative projects. The endowment also has funds to support collaboration in the digital humanities between the five liberal arts colleges in the Pacific Northwest Consortium and the University of Washington; in June 2015, the Simpson Center is sponsoring thirty people from the University of Washington and the Pacific Northwest 5 Consortium to attend the Digital Humanities Summer Institute at the University of Victoria.

Woodward is the author of Statistical Panic: Cultural Politics and Poetics of the Emotions (2009), Aging and Its Discontents: Freud and Other Fictions (1991), and At Last, the Real Distinguished Thing: The Late Poems of Eliot, Pound, Stevens, and Williams (1980). She is the editor of Figuring Age: Women—Bodies—Generations (1999), and The Myths of Information: Technology and Postindustrial Culture (1980), and coeditor, with Andreas Huyssen and Teresa de Lauretis, of The Technological Imagination: Theories and Fictions (1980). From 1986-1995 she coedited Discourse: Journal for Theoretical Studies in Media and Culture.

Woodward is a member of the Modern Language Association's Task Force on Doctoral Study in Modern Language and Literature and of the Steering Committee of HASTAC. She served on the Board of Directors of the National Humanities Alliance from 2003-2009 and was founding chair of the National Advisory Board of Imagining America, a broad-based network of scholars and leaders of cultural institutions devoted to public scholarship, from 2000-2005. From 1995-2001 she was President of the Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes and she continues to serve on its International Advisory Board. Woodward has received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. She was Director of the Center for Twentieth Century Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee from 1981 to 2000, where she taught in the Department of English, the interdisciplinary graduate program in Modern Studies, and the undergraduate program in Cultural and Technological Studies. She has also taught at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. She holds a B.A. in Economics from Smith College and a Ph.D. in Literature from the University of California at San Diego.
