I am Erica Hoffmeister and I am a graduate student pursuing an M.A. in English Literature and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing at Chapman University. I received my B.A. in English with a minor in Women's Studies from Vanguard University in 2006, originally attending Vanguard's Graduate Education program while I worked as a substitute teacher for grades K-12. In 2008 I switched programs to Chapman University's dual M.A./M.F.A., but after three semesters took a creative break and traveled around the country for three years, just returning to Chapman last semester. After living across the East Coast, the Midwest, the South, and traveling through the plains and pacific northwest, I have kept my gypsy wandering at bay long enough to focus on finishing my degrees and working towards a career in academia, while ultimately working toward publication, of course.
I received a creative writing grant to fund publication submissions, and have so far been a featured poet in Split Lip Magazine's fall issue. I currently work as a Graduate Teaching Assistant under Dr. Anna Leahy, with aspirations as a Professor of English. I also plan to continue my education further with a PhD in Women's Studies after completing this program, but not before continuing to travel and write as much as possible. I am focusing now on my thesis: a book-length collection of narrative poetry, which I will defend in the spring. I have recently received honorable mention for the 2014 Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition Prize for my short fiction piece, "Roots" and my poem, "Because I Say I Hate the Ocean, Except When I'm Alone" can currently be read in Split Lip Magazine's online Fall 2014 issue as a finalist in their annual chapbook competition.
