I am Managing Director of Discovery Virginia an institutional archive at Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. I consult with scholars and non-scholars on technical solutions, workflows, and grant writing, for publishing historical and cultural materials online. I was formerly Senior Associate Editor of the Papers of Thomas Jefferson: Retirement Series, where I was heavily involved with the development of the project’s technical infrastructure including the content management system and encoding standards. I have advised a variety of historical projects such as the Papers of Frederick Douglass and Frederick Law Olmsted. I am a co-editor of The Guide to Documentary Editing (3rd ed.), and a former president of the Association for Documentary Editing. I am a member of the Advisory Committee on Historical Diplomatic Documentation, Department of State, Foreign Relations of the United States, of the National Advisory Board, The Joseph Smith Papers, and the Social Networks and Archival Context, a Mellon-funded project at Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities (IATH).
