I am a Ph.D. candidate in History at Carnegie Mellon University. My dissertation examines German prisoners of war (POWs) in the Soviet Union from 1941 to 1956. I am interested in why the Soviet Union delayed the repatriation of their German POWs until 11 years after the end of the war. I argue that it was for economic reasons, which I partially illustrate through GIS mapping the intersections of POW camp locations, work assignments, infrastructure, and natural resources.
