Personal Information

Brief Bio:

Nicholas Proferes is an Assistant Professor at the University of Kentucky’s School of Information Science. He was previously a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Ethics and Values in Design Lab at the University of Maryland’s College of Information Studies and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s School of Information Studies. His research interests include users’ understandings of socio-technical systems such as social media, societal discourse about technology, and issues of power and ethics in the digital landscape. As part of this research agenda, he has studied Twitter users’ understandings of information flows and how that knowledge impacts the choices users make on the platform; how tech leaders such as Mark Zuckerberg use strategic language choices to position their technologies in society; how communities of academic researchers are conceptualizing information ethics and the impact of that on their research practices; and how a federally funded technology development community navigated policy and ethics issues as part of their work on a new Internet architecture.
