Brief Bio:

Ph.D., American Studies, Yale University, 1990; B.A., American Studies, University of California at Santa Cruz, 1981. I focus on the intersections of race/gender/class with identity constructed through narrative (especially the trajectory from personal narrative to national mythology), and work in the field of trauma studies. Recently I've collaborated with public health/medical researchers on topics including homicide-suicide, diagnosing dying, and PTSD. I am currently collaborating with a biomedical research team that seeks to improve retention in care of HIV-positive women in Malawi. I'm a Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Study in the Humanities and the Social Sciences, and the scientific editor for the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Bern, Switzerland.
