J. Michael Kinsey
J. Michael Kinsey is a 3rd year doctoral student in the Department of Performing and Media Arts at Cornell University and trained at the esteemed Cincinnati Conservatory of Music where he received his BFA in Musical Theatre. His research interrogates the intersection of race and sexuality in US Black Performance. Through this engagement with scholarship, embodied performance and ethnographic methodologies his focus includes Black Queer Studies, African American Theatre, Dance & Film, Critical Race Studies, Solo Performance, Acting Methods and Directing as Practice. He has presented research and performance at the Black Theatre Network, Association of Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE), Hemispheric Institute's Encuentro (Santiago, Chile), and the Summer Institute in Performance Studies (Northwestern University). J. Michael has performed at various professional spaces, both nationally and internationally and he is a two time nominee for the Audelco Award for Best Actor in a Musical (NYC). He was also an artistic contributor/consultant to the 2014 Bessie Award winning ballet Mr. Tol E. Rance choreographed by Camille A. Brown. His solo work 'The Kids' is in it's final stages of workshop and should make its professional premiere in the 2017-2018 season.
