Personal Information

Brief Bio:

I am a third-year graduate student in the Anthropology of Religion working on contemporary Indonesian Islamic movements. My field sites are centered around Habib Syech bin Abdul Qodir Assegaf who performers specific Islamic devotional prayers every night across Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, and China to crowds of thirty thousand. I employ participant-observation, interviews, and surveys as a means by which to analyze the growing popularity and impact of this phenomenon on Indonesian Islam, understandings of global Islam, and the place of religion in the 'modern' world.
