I am Professor of History and American Studies and Special Advisor to the President at the University of Mary Washington. I also oversee the Division of Teaching and Learning Technologies and the Digital Knowledge Center. I am co-PI, along with Ellen Holmes Pearson, of COPLACDigital, a Mellon-funded Digital Liberal Arts project. My PhD in American History is from Johns Hopkins University, and I research the history of the Civil War, veterans, families, the Pinkertons, mental institutions, the 19th-Century American South, and the digital humanities. I am the Digital History Reviews editor for the Journal of American History and I co-chair the inaugural Digital History Working group for the American Historical Association.
