Jill Planche is a PhD student in Interdisciplinary Humanities at Brock University, Ontario, Canada. An academic with a professional background in marketing and fundraising in the arts in Canada, she earned a doctorate in English Literature in 2007. Her dissertation, “In a Large Landscape”: The Resonance of Land and Landscape in the Literature and Art of South Africa, reveals the close bond between landscape and narrative and illustrates the confining, claustrophobic condition that apartheid creates as an indelible imagery in South African literature and art. The study combines the rubrics of history, geography, cultural studies and literature to seek below the physical surface into the mythical and metaphysical realm. Jill has returned to the academic world to continue study of South African cultural work by investigating the space of theatre, and its role in South Africa’s socio-economic milieu.
