Hilary Symes is studying visual anthropology at Temple University and has an M.A. in museum anthropology from Columbia University. She has held positions and internships in museum education at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Folk Art Museum, and the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts. Her collections-based research at the Smithsonian's Summer Institute in Museum Anthropology and the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, where she worked with barkcloth from the Titian Peale collection, led to her interest in the U.S. Exploring Expedition, scientific collecting, and Hawaiian material culture. She is continuing this work through Temple University's Digital Humanities Scholars Program.
