Dr Hilary Kalmbach is the Sir Christopher Cox Junior Fellow at New College, Oxford and will soon take up a tenure-track position in Middle Eastern History at University of Sussex. She is a cultural and social historian who studies Islam in the modern Middle East, focusing especially on authority, knowledge, and education. Dr Hilary Kalmbach is the Sir Christopher Cox Junior Fellow at New College, Oxford and will soon take up a tenure-track position in Middle Eastern History at University of Sussex. She is a cultural and social historian who studies Islam in the modern Middle East, focusing especially on authority, knowledge, and education. Dr Kalmbach completed her doctoral work at St Antony’s College, Oxford, submitting a dissertation on Cairo’s Dar al-ʿUlum teacher training school. She won the 2007 BRISMES Graduate Article Prize, and co-edited the 22-chapter volume Women, Leadership, and Mosques: Changes in Contemporary Islamic Authority (Brill, 2012). Before coming to Oxford, she completed an AB in Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University and studied female Islamic leadership while a Fulbright Fellow in Damascus, Syria. She is on the board of the British Society of Middle Eastern Studies (BRISMES) and the Syrian Studies Association (MESA affiliate). Further information is available at www.hilarykalmbach.com.
