I am currently a PhD student at the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication, Arizona State University. I am trained as a cultural geographer and spent many years teaching tourism management in New Zealand and Canada. My current focus is the rhetorical construction of space, place, and mobility with a particular emphasis on the contested nature of national identity within US railroad travel. I have embraced E. V. Walter's concept of Topistics, -the holistic study of place - and envision the role of rhetorical critic as one who interrupts dominant discourses, empowers community, and embraces critical pedagogy in built, imagined, and virtual environments.
