Elspeth H. Brown is an Associate Professor of History and the Director of the Centre for the Study of the United States and the American Studies Program, University of Toronto (http://www.utoronto.ca/csus/). Her research focuses on the history of gender, sexuality, and commercial culture in the 20th century United States, with a specific interest in the historical relationship between visuality and subject formation. She is the author of The Corporate Eye: Photography and the Rationalization of American Commercial Culture, 1884-1929 (Johns Hopkins 2005, winner of the 2005 best book in Business, Management & Accounting, given by the Association of American Publishing); co-editor of Cultures of Commerce: Representation and American Business Culture, 1877-1960 (Palgrave, 2006) and co-editor of Feeling Photography (forthcoming, Duke UP). She is currently working on two main projects: a history of the commercial modeling industry in the US; and an oral history of cis-gendered female partners of trans men.
