Full Bio:

I’m a PhD student in the English and Interactive Technology and Pedagogy Certificate programs at CUNY Graduate Center, and also a veteran of the IT industry, with over twenty years of experience in systems development and management. After finishing my undergraduate degree in English (Durham University, UK, a long time ago), I somewhat accidentally got a job in IT, and since then have worked on almost every aspect of the project lifecycle: I’ve written programs, specifications, proposals, and user guides, designed process flows, tested interfaces, trained users, led teams and managed projects. Going back to graduate school (Liberal Studies MA at the New School for Social Research, NYC), I became interested in the relationship between literary theories of the text and online textual forms and practices. And at CUNY have been learning about the digital humanities, which is drawing all these strands together. In the upcoming year, for example, I’ll be researching the use of web-based text analysis tools in the undergraduate literature classroom, in collaboration with a small user group of CUNY faculty. In addition, I’ll be working with my HASTAC Scholars nominator, Matt Gold, to launch the CUNY Digital Humanities Initiative (DHI), which aims to build connections and community among those involved in DH work across the CUNY campuses.
