Brief Bio:

Christopher Taylor is PhD student in the English Department at the University of Texas at Austin. His dissertation, “Unknowing the Middle Ages: Eschatology, Revision, and Middle English Poetics,” explores how key Middle English texts focus not on the production of knowledge, but on the recognition that the unknown carries epistemological value in itself. After tracing the histories four figures that have had significant typological or symbolic impact on medieval ideas about the limits of knowledge (Herod, Prester John, Pearl, Criseyde), this project proposes that an examination of a text’s relationship to the concept of the unknown helps isolate the literary as a discrete textual descriptor in late-medieval England. Christopher is interested (both within and outside of this project) in productive historical models of inter-dependency between "humanities" and "scientific" disciplines.
