Managing Editor sought for Social Text, a quarterly scholarly journal with editorial offices in New York City. The successful candidate will have experience in both print and electronic publishing, and should have an active interest in exploring innovations in these areas. Ideally, she or he will be familiar with the domain of scholarly publishing, and specifically with the journal’s intellectual and political mission.
The managing editor’s main tasks consist of supervising the publication of the journal, preparing and uploading material to the editorial collective’s website, and facilitating the intellectual work of the editorial collective. She or he also shepherds review of articles, submits the final journal manuscript to the publisher, and handles post-submission communications between authors and the production staff of the press. The managing editor also coordinates the monthly meetings of the co-editors, the meetings of the editorial collective, and supervises planning for events sponsored by the journal. Additional responsibilities include: ongoing liaison with website developers and members of the web editorial team; editorial assistant supervision; day-to-day web duties; and financial management.
Although this position reports to the journal’s co-editors, it is essential that the managing editor demonstrate a willingness and capacity to take initiative and work independently. The position requires 60 hours of work per month, the bulk of which will be self-directed. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
Requires an advanced degree or work in graduate studies, preferably in humanities or social sciences, or the equivalent in professional experience, and a minimum of two years related employment. Excellent verbal, written, and computer-based communication skills required, including competency with publishing experience, knowledge of copyright issues, and social media best practices. Applicants with experience working with submission management platforms (i.e., Submittable) are encouraged to apply.
Interested applicants should submit a brief cover letter addressed to the Editors of Social Text, with a recent CV and three references, in electronic form to firstname.lastname@example.org by August 5th, 2015.
