Doctoral education opens doors to engaging and often unexpected pathways, with opportunities for significant public impact —an essential element of reinvesting in higher education as a public good.
In this interview with Sam Risak, Katina Rogers will discuss how scholars can reimagine what constitutes scholarly success in ways that support both their individual career pathways as well as a larger goal of reaching greater equity in and outside the academy. Dr. Rogers will talk with Sam Risak about her pathway as well as her work at CUNY, drawing on her new book, Putting the Humanities PhD to Work: Thriving in and Beyond the Academy.
Sam Risak is a Creative Writing MFA candidate at Chapman University where she recently earned an MA in English with a Digital Environmental Humanities thesis that looked at how the myth functions as a response to environmental uncertainty. She is the Editorial Assistant for Interviews at CRAFT Literary as well as a reviewer for TAB: A Journal in Poetry & Poetics. She writes across genres with works published or forthcoming in Writer’s Digest, Lit Hub, AWP’s The Writer’s Chronicle, Terrain.org, Los Angeles Review of Books, Entropy, Barrelhouse, and the Crab Orchard Review.
Katina Rogers is co-director of the Futures Initiative and the CUNY Humanities Alliance at the Graduate Center, City University of New York, and director of programs and administration for HASTAC, the online scholarly network. She researches and writes about higher education reform, including scholarly communication practices, professionalization and career development, public scholarship, and advocacy for fair labor policies. She holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
This will be the twenty-seventh of a series of HASTAC Webinars that started in 2019. In this series, HASTAC Scholars facilitate 45-minute webinars on topics ranging from Interview Prep or Blog Posting to Networking, Personal Statements, and Pedagogy Strategies for Adjuncts.
