MLA 2018 CFP: Race and the Work of the Humanities

Wednesday, March 29, 2017 - 3:00am

MLA 2018, January 4-7, NYC

Call for Participants: Race and the Work of the Humanities

This working group (more about the new MLA working group format) considers the theoretical and practical dynamics of race/racism in humanities work broadly: at universities, community colleges, public humanities programs, and in "alt-ac" work. What are the implications of thinking the "humanities" in light of the Afropessimist conception of the "human" as antiblackness? What do we make of the push for alt-ac humanities training in context of long-standing service missions of ethnic studies? Where, by whom, and for whom are humanities centers/programming? (Cultural workers, alt-ac, humanities center staff, graduate students, full/adj faculty, CCs, HBCUs, 4yr colleges all encouraged.) Send brief CV, 250-word statement of interest.

Deadline for submissions: Wednesday, March 29, 2017

Simon Abramowitsch, U of California ( ); Trisha Barua, U of California ( )
