Heinz Rüther, Professor of Geomatics at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, will be giving a lecture at Rice University on January 19th, 2012 from 4-6pm. Rüther's research is linked to the development of photogrammetry from analog to digital, and satellite remote sensing. He has had a continued interest in the African continent, working on spatial and space-related GIS (Geographic Information Systems) projects throughout Sub-saharan Africa, including a GIS database for African Heritage sites with the Zamani Project (see video). He is dedicated to the development of a Geomatics education network in Africa and the Arabian region. He is also interested in the development of Geomatics as a tool for environmental management. Rüther's visit promises an exciting and interdisciplinary opportunity for scholars and students of anthropology, history, computer science, geography, architecture, archaeology, and sociology.
