Graduate Student Project Assistant for the Spring Creek Literacy Project
The Spring Creek Literacy Project (SCLP) is a DukeEngage domestic program located in Madison County, North Carolina.  The project’s mission is to foster literacy education, social equity, and economic opportunity for girls and young women in rural Appalachia.
The SCLP’s Founder and Director, Dr. Deborah Hicks, is seeking a graduate student Project Assistant to assist with the program’s development and implementation in Fall 2011 and Spring 2012.  This new position also requires a willingness to serve as the program’s DukeEngage Site Coordinator in June-July 2012.
Specific requirements for this position include:
A connection (e.g., personal, familial, community-based, academic) and/or deep interest in the Appalachian region.
An interest in education and social justice in the lives of girls and women.
A background and/or interest in the teaching of literacy (e.g., literature, reading, writing) and digital literacy (e.g., digital storytelling).
A commitment to community service in rural, economically distressed areas and to engaged, service learning experiences for undergraduates.
A willingness to travel to the NC mountains, up to two trips per semester.
A willingness to live and work in the NC mountains in June-July 2012
Prior experience in the non-profit arena would also be extremely helpful.
