The Connected Learning Research Network invites you to submit proposals to participate in a two-year research study of "connected learning." Your group will become part of a national network of people who are studying what connected learning environments (CLEs) look like and what/how youth learn in them.

Interested in being part of an innovative effort to show how youth are learning in connected learning environments?

The Connected Learning Research Network invites you to submit proposals to participate in a two-year research study of "connected learning." Your group will become part of a national network of people who are studying what connected learning environments (CLEs) look like and what/how youth learn in them. These survey results will provide you with a rich picture of how your participants' experiences reflect the principles of connected learning. Practically, these data could be used for program development and improvement. Staff or adult leaders in your group will be generously compensated for helping administer surveys, and youth will receive incentives for participating. Connected learning environments are spaces where people come together, both in person and online, and begin to reimagine the possibilities for education in the information age. Your group, program, or online community is invited to compete to be part of the study. If selected, youth aged 13-16 would take part in a longitudinal survey of their experiences, and you will receive results from the study for your group or community. Connected learning is inspired by three sets of principles:

We encourage applications from groups that meet face-to-face, meet online, or combine both online and physical spaces in their organizational structure. We especially seek groups that engage in work related to the underlying educational value of equity, focusing efforts on providing equitable learning opportunities for underserved communities, and bringing together diverse populations of youth. We are seeking 30 to 40 groups to participate in this study.

ELIGIBILITY & REQUIREMENTS

We welcome applications from any group that aligns well with the principles of connected learning (see the application templateand the Connected Learning Principles page on this website for more information) and:

  1. Can recruit at least 15 participants aged 13-16 for the first wave of the study;
  2. Is established and stable, i.e. is likely to have staff who can support the group's participation in the study for the next two years;
  3. Uses digital media;
  4. Is able to help researchers by obtaining informed consent from youths' parents.

Note: If your group has support for research or evaluation from the MacArthur Foundation already to study your connected learning environment, please email us to determine eligibility.

Time Commitment To help facilitate youth taking the survey in manageable periods of time, the survey questionnaire will be divided in half. Each sitting of the survey will take approximately 20 minutes. The overall time commitment will depend on the total number of participants at your site. There will be 4 sittings of the survey in total (maximum of an hour and a half) across the 2 year period in which the research study will take place.

Compensation Each site that is selected to participate in the study will receive a lump sum of $500 compensation for administering the surveys, regardless of the number of youth participants at the site. The compensation is expected to be funneled back into the organization for resources or enrichment. Youth participants will receive a $10 gift certificate compensation for each sitting of the survey they complete, up to a maximum of $40.

Potential BenefitsThere is no direct benefit for survey respondents. The findings from the Longitudinal Study on Connected Learning will fill an important gap in the field of education technology and learning. The results will help us to assess the contextual and individual factors underlying our model of connected learning. In particular, the 2013 survey will create baseline data that can serve as benchmarks for further longitudinal studies.

Potential Risks The risks and potential discomforts will be minimal. Demographic questions in the survey should be familiar to most participants. Names and subject identifiers will only be used for longitudinal tracking purposes and individual responses will be aggregated into the survey database. A potential breach of confidentiality is highly unlikely. All electronic data will be stored on a password-protected database with security protections such as encryption and firewall.

SUBMISSION & SELECTION

To be considered, the application template, which details the points a successful submission will address, must be completed and submitted. The deadline for submissions is 8:00 PM (Pacific Time) on Friday, September 28th, 2012. Notification of selection or rejection will be sent via email no later than Wednesday, October 17th, 2012.
