DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY AND CULTURE PROGRAM

 

Position Summary

The Digital Technology and Culture program at Washington State University in Pullman—the flagship campus of a Carnegie RU/VH university—invites applications for a Clinical Assistant Professor, Web and Interactive Design and Development starting August 2019. This is a temporary, nine month, three year appointment with possibility of renewal. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience, and benefits are competitive.

Job duties

As a Clinical Assistant Professor the successful applicant is expected to teach undergraduate courses with an emphasis on creative and critical web design and development, interactive design, scripting, front-end development, information architecture and user experience; aid in the management and development of lab spaces; be an active part of the DTC core faculty; and engage in creative production and/or conduct scholarly research leading to publication in areas of expertise. The successful candidate will teach core courses in DTC along with specific course in the Interactive Technologies and Development option which explores the principles of web design, coding, information architecture, and usability in a global cultural context.

Campus and Program Description

WSU is a land grant, multi-campus, state university. The Web and Interactive Design and Development

position will serve on the Pullman campus, located in rural Eastern Washington on the traditional homelands of the Palus Band of Indians and the ceded lands of the Nez Perce Tribe. The successful candidate will join a program that is part of a large, interdisciplinary department consisting of scholars and teachers of design, animation, critical digital literacy, ethics, literature, rhetoric and composition, creative writing, linguistics, and gender and sexuality studies, The program offers the B.A., as well as a graduate certificate in digital culture and humanities. The DTC program values engagement with critical theory and creative production together and places an emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion in course work, outreach and scholarship. The program and larger department are committee to equity and access for historically underrepresented groups.

Minimum/Required Qualifications

  1. MA, MFA, or Ph.D. in Information Sciences, Interactive Design, Web Design, or closely related area by the hire date;
  2. Evidence of successful classroom and individual instruction;
  3. Evidence of ability to mentor students, including those from diverse backgrounds;
  4. Evidence of productive research program or creative production in web and interactive design appropriate to projected rank and responsibilities;

Preferred Qualifications

1.       Evidence of running lab spaces and programs;

2.       Evidence of commitment to retention and student-success initiatives;

3.       Evidence of successful outreach and community engagement;

4.       Professional experience in web design, interactive design, or related multimedia fields;

5.       Specialization in sub-fields including, but not limited to: critical digital literacies, digital humanities, digital media studies and data visualization.
