Associate/Full Professor of the Learning Sciences - Indiana University, Bloomington
The Indiana University School of Education Learning Sciences Program seeks to recruit a senior faculty member beginning in the fall of 2013. The School of Education’s Learning Sciences Program was created in 2003 through a Chancellor’s initiative to expand Indiana University’s already world-class programs in Cognitive Science, Informatics, and Education. The program now has six full time faculty members and has recently developed a fully online certificate program to complement its residential MA and PhD programs. The program is seeking an established scholar with an international reputation in the Learning Sciences and the ability to define and sustain an innovative and externally funded program of research. All research agendas will be considered, although preference will be given to those that appear to complement and extend the expertise of the current faculty. Possible areas of focus include, but are not limited to, the following: support for equity and social justice in learning environments, cognitive studies in education, embodied cognition, mobile gaming and/or augmented reality in education, computational literacy, computer-supported collaborative learning, informal learning environments, literacy learning, and all areas of STEM learning.
The ideal candidate will be either a Full Professor or a senior level Associate Professor with experience leading a successful academic program and/or a significant research center and an interest in continuing to do so. In addition to maintaining a productive program of research, responsibilities will also include the following: advise PhD and MA students; teach courses within the Learning Sciences program (while these will primarily be PhD and MA level residential courses, they may occasionally include online graduate level courses or undergraduate courses in educational psychology, theory or design); and participate in continuing programmatic innovation such as fostering new partnerships with other departments, programs, schools, and systems.
The Indiana University Learning Sciences Program is also closely aligned with the Center for Research on Learning and Technology (CRLT), which provides shared resources for faculty to conduct externally funded research into learning and technology to support learning. Applicants for the faculty position who are interested in being considered for the role of Center Director should state this in their application materials and discuss their relevant experiences. The Director’s duties include the conceptualization and development of new grant applications, programs, strategies, and initiatives to advance the academic, research, and programmatic agenda of the Center. The Director will also help facilitate organizational relationships and foster linkages with other universities, programs, and K-12 or informal learning partners involved in projects aligned with the Center’s mission.
