Art History of Jewelry

Art History of Jewelry
Saturday, November 30, 2013 (All day)

I am working on a Project for the Smithsonian Institute -I am attempting to create a taxonomy for them- to be used for classifying the collection pieces through crowdsourcing. The collection is jewelry form ancient times to modern day. The project is to foster education, scholarship, and cultural heritage. Each piece of jewelry has an image, description, and sources attached to it. As of now there is no way to index/classify these pieces for search and retrieval.

I know how to create a great taxonomy but I do not know much about Art History or jewelry. I am looking for a few people to help me out with the project.  I need someone who knows about crowdsourcing to bounce a few ideas off of. The bigger need is for an art historian or someone that knows a lot about art history and/or jewelry. This person will help me identify terminology that describes the art history of jewelry and help me assemble the terms into a hierarchy for search and classification. This volunteer work will be done remotely so anyone, from anywhere, can help out as long as they have an internet connection.

Anyone who is interested in crowdsourcing, art history, or jewelry please contact me for more details.

Hi Ashleigh! I'm a grad student of Ancient History and Classical Archaeology at North Carolina State University, and I'm really interested in your work--especially in the ancient component of the jewelry collection. I'm happy to see another scholar applying digital humanities to art history and ancient history!

I've recently created a group on HASTAC called Digital Archaeology and Ancient History (, where I'm hoping scholars working with ancient material will be able to collaborate and share their work with each other. I'd love to have you as a member of the group in order to share your work, and maybe the others in the group will be able to assist in some way as well!
