Spring Creek Literacy Project
The Spring Creek Literacy Project (SCLP) is a DukeEngage domestic program located in Hot Springs, North Carolina. The project’s mission is to foster literacy education, social equity, and economic opportunity for girls and young women in rural Appalachia.
The SCLP’s Founder and Director, Dr. Deborah Hicks, is seeking a Site Coordinator to join the program this summer: May 28 – August 1, 2012. This summer position could have longer term potential as a Project Assistant position in the 2012-2013 academic year.
The following would be very helpful in terms in this position:
A connection (e.g., personal, familial, community-based, academic) and/or deep interest in the Appalachian region.
An interest in education and social justice in the lives of girls and women.
A background and/or interest in the teaching of literacy (e.g., literature, reading, writing) and/or digital literacy (e.g., digital storytelling).
A commitment to community service in rural, economically distressed areas and to engaged, service learning experiences for undergraduates.
An interest in documentary studies and photography.
A willingness to live and work in the NC mountains for nine summer weeks.
