Seven winning projects in the Innovation category and ten projects in Knowledge-Networking were awarded $2 million in 2008.

The first Competition (2008) awarded a total of $2 million to 17 projects representing compelling work in the field of Digital Media and Learning. A number of brilliant ideas in the field of digital media and learning deserve wider dissemination, circulation, discussion, translation, application, articulation, and customization. Not every inventor/developer is a good knowledge-networker. Knowledge-networking takes good ideas and circulates them widely, taking full advantage of the Web's potential for collaborative thinking. It enables communication in which many can contribute, shape, and share. Knowledge-networking is “do-it-yourself” field-building, collective matchmaking across communities of those who have and those who seek information, so that each can teach and learn from the other. The Knowledge-Networking Awards were given to proven communicators, those already networking with others and dedicated to digital learning through blogs, social networking, social bookmarking, podcasting, world-building environments, and other on-line communities. From more than 1,000 applications, seven projects won Innovation awards of $100,000 or $238,000;* in the Knowledge-Networking category, 10 projects received awards ranging from $30,000 to $72,000.*
