Trans*H4CK @ #DML2014 - 'Trans*H4CK Reboot: A Workshop on Trans People and Tech Inspired by the First Hackathon for Trans Empowerment'

Saturday, March 8, 2014 - 11:00am to 1:30pm

I will be doing a cafe talk at this year's Digital Media Learning conference! I wanted to take the opportunity to invite you all to that. Here's the original proposal -- and I aim to also discuss collectively how the hackathon model might be used to think and learn about social issues:

Trans*H4CK Reboot: A Workshop on Trans People & Tech Inspired by the First Hackathon for Trans Empowerment

Are you interested in tech or social media that benefits trans* people? Then you’d be interested in Trans*H4CK, a hackathon and speaker series brought to life by Dr. Kortney Ziegler ( in September 2013. The Trans*H4CK series aims is to radically shift the ways trans* people live by creating empowering technology that addresses social problems, including but not limited to: access to services, safety, and community sustainability.

This workshop is a condensed version of the brainstorming portion of the 2-day hackathon, covering: trans*-oriented projects and people that are already working in/on tech, small group designing of your own Trans*H4CK project(s), plus ideas and discussion about platforms to use to bring your project to life.

Learn more about Trans*H4CK and its 2014 series at:

Main objectives (time-allowing):
1) Learn about the state of tech & trans people
2) Take the first steps toward being involved in your own tech project(s) that can benefit trans* people
3) Learn about platforms that could help bring your ideas to life

Hi Jack --

Happy to see you're interested! And, thanks Fiona for summarizing nicely -- I didn't catch this exchange until now.

As mentioned, it's at DML in Boston. I"m happy to do a Google Hangout about it and/or a Twitter chat -- I hadn't thought of those (thanks again Fiona!). I'll be encouraging participants to use the #transh4ck and #DML14 hashtags with any thoughts/questions during the cafe talk.

I don't know where you're situated, but Trans*H4CK became a traveling series this year and will be in Chicago soon then aims to be in New York. I will post the event for Chicago now and New York when it comes about.

Feel free to tweet me if you have any questions you may have as well!

Hi Harlan, Where is this Trans*H4CK event and can people take place virtually? Thanks! Jack

Hey Jack,

I'm sure Harlan will be back with more details, but this is taking place at DML 2014 in Boston. The address is on the lefthand sidebar above (though it's really hard to see) at the Fairmont Copley Plaza conference space.

I don't think it's a typical hackathon itself, but rather a cafe talk for discussing the Trans*H4CK experience, how it worked, and how the hackathon model itself can be used for other social and political issues. It's being held in the DML Cafe series, which is more like an informal space for gathering and discussing.

But maybe Harlan would be open to hosting a Twitter chat ahead of time, to take virtual questions? Or I'm sure there would be interest in a Google Hangout after the conference for those who couldn't make it.

I'm flying back into Boston that day, and hope to swing by to say hi!

Thanks, Fiona! I may indeed be able to swing that way on my return trip to the Queering the Quotidian conference. Please count me for all future Trans*H4CK ventures. Maybe a trans wikipedia takeover from Boston and Brunswick? ;)
