Group 3 Planning/Check-In Post

Hi Group Three! Apparently, I am your leader. :)

To get us started, I thought the simplest route would be to generate a post we could all comment on and to create a rough plan for the days ahead. Please read over what I've posted here and let me know if this will work for you. Once I've gotten feedback/buy-in from everyone, I'll post an actual plan for us. (Also, we can use the commenting feature on this post as a way of getting in touch with each other with general questions/updates over the course of the week.)

Currently, we have five group members and (I believe) four pieces of writing to workshop. (Alma, based on your intro, it sounds like you won't be sharing a piece of writing? If I'm wrong, please let me know and I'd adjust accordingly.) This means we should be able to read/respond to one person's writing per day.

For distributing work, my suggestion would be for everyone to email the group by 9am EST on their assigned day with their document and/or a link to it online. However, since this is an asynchronous process, it might make sense to share your work with the group as soon as you're ready to. That way people can get a head start on their reading and feedback, if that's useful to them.

ETA: We've actually got five pieces to read. See the Google Doc for the suggested schedule

For distributing feedback, I have one question: How do you want to receive feedback? Is a document from each group member with comments enough or are you also hoping for us to talk about your piece as a group? Also, did people want to try and set up times to talk via Google Hangout or Skype?

(To be honest, I'm going to be very busy with grading over the next few days, so it will be pretty difficult for me to find a time to "meet" virtually. However, I'm happy to try and set something up for others, even if I can't join in.)

ETA: Sounds like everyone's interested in receiving individual feedback from each group member, but also open to finding a way to also talk as a group. See the Google Doc for a suggested feedback process.

Please drop a comment here to let me know what you're thinking and if the ideas above work for you. Ideally, I'd like to get word back from everyone tonight, so we can be ready to go in the morning.

Thanks!

ETA: Okay, everyone, here we go! Based on the comments and our official schedule, I've put together a plan for this week. You should also have received an invite to a shared Google Docs Folder. Please take a look and see if this works for you. Suggestions are welcome!

Sounds good, Alma!

Based on everyone's comments and our group numbers, I've created a Google Doc with a suggested plan for the week. Take a look and see what you think?

You should also be receiving an invite to a shared Google Drive folder, in case you need a place to upload your work.

(In response to your second post below, it doesn't look like we'll be able to do 1 person per day. We've got 5 people to look at and the schedule has us reading today through Thursday. I tried to figure out a way to do this in the doc linked above, but I'm open to alt suggestions.)

Hello fellow group members:

First of all, thank you Katie for being our fearless leader!  I appreciate you doing this.

My manuscript is "ready to go" whenever folks are ready to read it.  It's still rough, but in good enough shape theoretically and analytically that I think ya'll can make substantive comments.

As far as meeting via Skype or Google hangout goes, I'm up for anything.  I'm pretty busy Monday-Wednesday until 5:00 PT, but am mostly free on Thursday and Friday afternoons. If we can't coordinate online meeting times, I'm also happy to chat here on HASTAC or elsewhere.

Finally, here's my contact info (it's in my introduction too, but this might be an easier place to access it):

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone soon!

Hi Lori! Were you okay with the distribution process mentioned above or did you have other thoughts? Also, how would you prefer to receive feedback? Is a document from each group member with comments enough or are you also hoping for us to talk about your piece as a group?

Thanks!

Hi Katie,

I just emailed you feedback on your draft.  I enjoyed reading your piece and hope you find my comments helpful.

If you would like follow-up comments or have questions, please let me know.

My thanks to Katie as well and to Lori Beth for putting together a great group. I am mostly available during the coming week for chat or skype,, as it gratefully falls between Spring and summer teaching for me.

My hope would be to get (and give) some general, asynchronous feedback, along with in-text notes and/or questions as it's often easier to make a comment alongside the text than free-floating. From that feedback, general discussion could develop?

Also my contact info: Email is levitt.linda@gmail.com and Twitter is @lindalevitt.

Looking forward!

Hey Group three!
Katie thanks for being the leader. You are right about me not sharing, I don't have any research to share at the moment. However, I hope that I can provide feedback that is useful to the rest of you who do. I can do Google hangouts or Skype, the best time for me is 7pm CT and later.
I can't wait to start reading!
Cheers!

Echoing the group, thanks so much to Katie for her efforts as our leader!

Like Lori Beth, I have an existing piece (a dissertation chapter) that I'd appreciate feedback on. Re: the distribution process, either method works for me -- maybe we could do something like some people give close reading feedback (commenting on specific sentences, paragraphs, etc), and others supply feedback on a more macro level (i.e. is the argument hanging together well in terms of patterns/evidence/theoretical contribution, etc). As far as I'm concerned, feedback in any style is good for me :)

I'm finishing up another dissertation chapter this week (!) so I'm on a writing schedule, but can modify it to meet virtually, if we decide to do that.

Hi Dara,

I just emailed you feedback on your manuscript.  Please let me know if you have any questions or want follow-up comments.

I enjoyed reading your work!

I haven't been able to upload my introduction but am grateful that I have been made a member of this group.  I would be happy to email the group or to put my document on Google Doc for everyone to comment on when it is convenient to them. Perhaps we should only have a skype session if there are points of clarification. I am also busy this week and of course from South Africa operating on a different time schedule so a synchronous meeting might be quite difficult to arrange.

Let me know if we are to email our docs or if I should upload on google and share the link with everyone.

my email addresses are vbozalek@uwc.ac.za or vbozalek@gmail.com

This is a very good opportunity for which I am grateful!

Good Morning Vivienne,

You're actually in Group #1 instead of Group #3. We thought you might enjoy working with Jessie as you commented on each other's posts.  :)  We've added two more folks to your group, so you should be good to go!

Cheers,

Lori Beth

Hi Katie and Group:

To echo what Linda and Dara said, I'd like to get in-line comments/feedback if that's possible.  I'm also happy to provide feedback to other folks in any form or style they like.

On second thought I have an article that I am in the process of writing about the temazcal. It is in English and I am going to be interviewing the temazcal leader/owner/shaman. So add me to the list :D I will share what I have according to Katie's instructions.

Cheers!

Hi Alma,

I just sent you feedback regarding your project on the temazcal. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like additional comments.

Do we have set days on which we'll each be posting? I think I missed that in the thread.

97

Done and done! Thanks Katie. I posted my piece--it's actually a conference presentation seeking to become an essay, so it's a relatively easy read. :)

97

Hello Linda,

I sent you feedback on your essay earlier this afternoon. I hope it's useful!  If you have follow-up questions, please let me know.

Lori Beth

Lori Beth, thanks! I saw your post earlier and am trying to finish up reviewing a couple of student papers before taking a look. Your feedback is much appreciated.

more soon,

Linda

My piece is posted, too -- let me know if there are any issues with accessing it!

Hi,

My office computer is being wonky and won't let me upload my doc to the google folder, so I'll do it this evening as soon as I get home.  In the meantime, I'll start reading and responding to other folks' work.

Hey everyone-

My Google doc is in the file. I hope it is ok as a Google doc and not a Word doc. It is still an embroy really so it has been in Google docs since that is how I usually work when I am writing.

Take care and I am looking forward to reading everyone's work!

Hi Alma,

If it's okay with you, I may copy/paste your google doc to a Word doc so I can use Word's comments feature.  Afterward I'll email it to you.

Is that okay?

Lori Beth

99

Sure that's fine Lori Beth, I read the document first and now get what you were doing. Thanks!

BTW I will be online for the next 2 hours reading through the documents and doing other work, so I will be "around".

Cheers!

Okay everyone! As discussed, I've created a final blog post for any general comments, questions, or wrap-up conversation on our projects and the feedback we've received.
