Chapter 2: Learning vs. Education
The Duke University’s iPod experiment, which became international news. Why? This chapter considers questions such as: What happens when students are in charge? What happens when education begins without knowing the answer? This week surveys Western educational ideas--from Socrates, Descartes, Diderot, and Kant-- and looks at the the modern (Industrial Age) professional disciplinary form of education that emphasizes content acquisition and mastery of special knowledge. This includes a review of the Humboltian University and Friedrich Schleiermacher’s ideas of "import" (with emphasis on advancement of new knowledge) compared to French ideas of importance of certification, degrees, conformity of views, and hierarchy of elite education. It also look at the history of higher education in North America, from the University of Mexico (1551) to MOOCs today.
