Literacy Courseware Challenge

[via Emily Dalton Smith of the Gates Foundation]

As you may know, only a third of U.S. eighth graders are proficient in reading and writing. There is a real need for engaging, personalized tools targeted at improving student learning, especially those that can help students master skills aligned to the Common Core State Standards for literacy at the 4th–8th grade level.

That’s why we’re very excited to announce the Literacy Courseware Challenge (http://www.impatientoptimists.org/Posts/2013/02/Why-were-Investing-$6-million-in-Literacy-Learning-Technologies). Through this process, we intend to invest $6 million in innovative, engaging, personalized tools targeted at improving student mastery of Common Core State Standards for literacy at the 4th–8th grade levels.

The challenge will award 20-30 grants ranging from $25,000–$500,000 and include a pilot testing program. Proposals are welcome until March 29 at 5 p.m. PT.

We're very excited about this competition and encourage you to consider submitting a proposal and/or passing this information along to your colleagues, friends, and others who may be interested in and qualify for this opportunity. Please visit the Literacy Courseware Challenge page (http://www.gatesfoundation.org/learning/Pages/rfp-literacy-courseware-challenge.aspxfor more information on the requirements -- and don't hesitate to email literacy.challenge@gatesfoundation.org if you have any questions.
