Background

Safiya U. Noble, Ph.D. is an assistant professor of Media and Cinema Studies and faculty affiliate to the Institute for Communications Research, the Graduate School of Library & Information Science, and the Department of Gender and Womens Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research focuses on digital media platform design and social informatics, representation of people of color and women in commercial search and social media systems, and information policy. Her work also includes STEM barriers for African American women and girls.

Research/Creative Endeavor

Her current research is on the identity and representation in commercial search engines, and transnational Black labor in the development of information and communication technologies.
