Digital Youth and Participatory Learning

Mizuko (Mimi) Ito is a Research Scientist at the University of California Humanities Research Institute, and is working on the development of a Digital Media and Learning Research Hub at the University of California, Irvine.  Dr. Ito is a cultural anthropologist who studies new media use, particularly among young people in Japan and the United States.  She is the lead investigator on the multi-year ethnographic study, the Digital Youth Project, and author of numerous works including the forthcoming Engineering Play: A Cultural History of Children's Software (both from MIT Press).
 
Howard Rheingold is a recipient of a Digital Media and Learning Competition ?Knowledge-Networking? award for his Social Media Classroom. He teaches Participatory Media/Collective Action at the University of California-Berkeley's School of Information, and Digital Journalism at Stanford University.  Widely acclaimed as a prescient forecaster of the always-on era, he is the author of many books, including Tools for Thought (1984), Virtual Reality (1991), and Smart Mobs (2002).  He works, writes, teaches, and consults on all aspects of virtual communities, with the Cooperation Commons serving as the site of his ongoing investigation of cooperation and collective action.
