Before freshman year began, I was looking over the course catalogue and attempting to make the crucial decisions that would shape my first semester of college. An introductory course in Digital Humanities appeared under the Cinema and New Media Studies heading and, being interested in film and cinema studies, I decided to put it on my list. A few weeks later, I found myself in a class full of people who, like myself, had interested in Digital Humanities but no knowledge of it. Our first assignment was to describe what we felt the term "digital humanites" meant, and I was surprised at the breadth of academic disciplines and discourse on the effect of digitization that our answers covered. Over the weeks, the size of the class diminished as we all confronted the challenge of working within a discipline that is not clearly delineated or defined, an academic pursuit that spans disciplines and seeks to bring scolarship and pedagogy into the digital age. And it was a challenge, but well worth it in my opinion to be part of a discipline so rooted in connection and adaptability, with avenues of access to every area of interest.
This is my first year as a HASTAC scholar, and I am excited to be more involved in the discipline that sparked my interest as a freshman, though now in a different setting than a classroom. I am presently a sophomore at Hamilton College and have been working as an intern at Hamilton's Digital Humanities Initiative since my freshman year. At present, I am a video editor and videographer with an interest in pursuing film further as a career. Later this year, I will be declaring a major; I plan to create my own major and plan of study that combines my academic interest in film and comparative literature, along with my extracurricular interest in graphic novels and animation. I would like to explore how digital technology can bring together filmic, literary, and artistic elements especially with regards to interactive storytelling. Being involved in this community of scholars provides an opportunity much like that of the intro to Digital Humanities class: to expand my experience of the Digital Humanities, not just in my own niche, but across the breadth of what digital Humanities can aspire to be.
