Introductions, Open Access Publishing, Creative Commons, and Para-Academia

I'm a PhD candidate at the European Graduate School in Switzerland and, with my colleagues, I publish the Open Access, media-agnostic journal, continent.

October has been a really wonderful month for me so far because I learned I would join the HASTAC Scholars program, continent. published a new issue, and punctum books has published the edited proceedings of our first conference.

We've published with punctum before and really appreciate their commitment to Open Access (our first book was a selection of materials from the first year), which in this case meant that a curious party could download the book for free and also purchase a hard copy of the text.

But we're also fans of their para-academic practices. The term was introduced to us by Nicola Masciandaro and Eileen A. Joy (the two responsible for establishing punctum) in an invitation to an event they convened at the New York Public School with some of our favorite publishers. In this interview with Joy you can read about some of the metrics that punctum is setting for what a para-academic press can do (e.g. number of downloads and print purchases)

The para-academic is a concept still being developed, chewed upon, and we'll see how it sticks.

We published a collective document with our colleagues at the journal Speculations about para-academia in prepartation for a panel discussion we had at the Aesthetics in the 21st Century conference hosted by the University of Basel last Fall. Here's some video we recorded of that panel.

In the last serval issues we've had some more discussion about the para-academic figure, from Eileen A. Joy (during a panel discussion we had at Northeastern University last Fall), and most recently in our latest issue we have some thinking from our Managing Editor, Berit Soli-Holt, and Contributing Editor, Isaac Linder.

Here at HASTAC I am interested in learning from the community about Open Access and how digital publishing is changing the horizons of what academics are expected to do.
