Hi all! My name is Madeleine Esch. I’m an assistant professor in the Department of English and Communications at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island. I teach journalism and media studies and am developing a new course in Media & Gender. My research focuses on consumer culture and gender in media, particularly in lifestyle television. Most recently I’ve been thinking about how the History network program American Pickers reframes antiquing as anthropological inquiry and ruggedly macho exploration.
For FSDW15, I’m sharing my draft syllabus for ENG368: Media & Gender and an assignment overview for a video essay group project. I’ve never assigned this sort of video essay before, so I’m eager for feedback from my group members and anyone else who has sage advice about using video production to get students doing feminist media criticism.
