Hello HASTAC! I'm micha cárdenas, a PhD Candidate in Media Arts + Practice in the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California. This is my third year as a HASTAC scholar and I'm very happy to be here, giving back to this community that has given me so much. This post is a sort of introductory post of mine for tihs year. My work is practice-based research, using art and design as research for scholarship in media studies, transgender studies and performance studies.
For the past year, I've been developing a game that is a combination of interactive film, fiction, poetry and performance. The game is called Redshift and Portalmetal. I have a working beta now, and am looking for playtesters who can try out the game and give me feedback on their experience. No gaming expertise is necessary, and I'm looking for a variety of experiences to try this out and tell me how it feels. Please reply to this post or tweet at me, @michacardenas, to get in touch, and I'll send you the URL for the beta and my response survey questions. Thank you!
Update 10/30/2014: If you're in LA in November, I'll also be performing a live playtest at Game Over: The Fun and the Fury of Electronic Literature on November 6th at 8pm at USC.
If you're in Montreal in November, you can come to the opening night of the HTMlles Feminist New Media Festival, where I'll be doing a live performance playtest on November 8th at 7pm. Details here. I'll also be doing a workshop at the Feminist Media Studio at Condordia University on Digital Performance, discussing ways of combining poetry, performance and media using the Scalar digital publishing platform.
Here is some more info about the game, and some images from the game.
Redshift and Portalmetal: a game about transgender migration and intergalactic decolonization
Redshift and Portalmetal asks: as climate change forces us to travel to the stars and build new homes and families, how do we build on this land, where we are settlers, while working to undo colonization? The story uses space travel as a lens through which to understand the experience of transnational migration for a trans femme of color. Redshift and Portalmetal imagines possibilities of post-digital, post-media, and decolonial approaches to communication.
If you want to be a beta playtester, reply to this post or tweet at me, @michacardenas, to get in touch.
