Hello, and my apologies for introducing myself so late! My name is Megan Farnel, and I’m a first year PhD candidate in English at the University of Alberta.
When I’m not fighting with the snow and trying to unlearn all the country music that I was inundated with as an Albertan child, I work on issues of labour, gender, and sexuality in new media. Essentially, I’m really interested in how what we do online is (or is not) ‘counted’ as work, and the ways in which those decisions are frequently mediated by various forms of systemic oppression. My past work has included presentations on the rhetoric of safety in children’s online fan spaces, and an MA capstone paper on the politics of authorship in fanfiction and academic communities. I also spent the summer working with the Post Colonial Digital Humanities Summer School, which was an awesome and incredibly rewarding opportunity.
I’m absolutely thrilled to be part of the 2014 HASTAC scholars group, and I look forward to getting to know and work with many of you!
