I’m very excited to be a new HASTAC Scholar!
I’m currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Media, Art, and Text program at Virginia Commonwealth University. The curriculum there is unique because it combines the English, art, and mass communications departments in a variety of ways. I have more of a background in English—my M.A. is in rhetoric—but through the MATX program, I’ve been able to talk classes on documentary making and sound editing.
As a result, my dissertation also combines a variety of subjects, including book history, social media, and gender studies. It looks at how book reviews online compare with those in traditional publications. I became interested in this topic when I noticed that many book blogs cover genres that otherwise seem to go ignored, like romances.
I’m also very interested in collaborating with other HASTAC scholars on sound pieces. I bought a Zoom H4N about a year ago, and love it. I use it to record my friends telling stories. My friend Chris and I are also in the process of launching a podcast called “Nerding Out in RVA” (you can listen to the first episode here: http://soundcloud.com/nerding-out-in-rva/nerding-out-in-rva-episode-1). If you want to talk about working with audio, feel free to message me!
I look forward to talking with you all!
