WildLab (thewildlab.org, thewildlab.com) is a mobile app+website that helps birders and citizen scientists collect data while they bird. Users can also submit their findings to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's eBird site.
With funding from the MacArthur Foundation, WildLab was able to pilot an educational version of their app last year with over 500 NYC students (= thousands of bird sightings!). Results of the pilot study indicate that students who participated in the program showed increased interest and knowlege about birds and the environment. Teachers were also enthusiastic about using WildLab again with future classes.
I met WildLab's science and learning specialist Gabriel Willow over box lunches at the 2010 DML Winners event and he was kind enough to do a very impromptu video. My flip camerawork was definitely subpar, but as you will see, Gabriel, in true DML-winner-fashion, rose above and still managed to deliver an impressive demo of the Wildlab edu app (the pro version is also available). Thanks Gabriel!
