Hi all,

I am a PHD students at the Faculty of Education at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.  My study is based on a project we are running with 4th year pre-service teacher education students. Its a digital storytelling project in which students explore one or more social justice issues in education, embedding their own personal experience of social justice/injustice withing the larger socio economic context of South African Education. My research question is how a digital storytelling workshop framed by a pedagogy of discomfort can transform students' engagement across difference (or not ;)).. the pedagogy of discomfort looks at the interplay of emotional and cognitive labour and resonates with our experiences in this workshops. I am using the affective turn as a theoretical framework. The paper I would like to submit to this workshop looks at some of the tensions when using emotions in the classroom, in particular the notion of sentimentality and uncritical responses to trauma.

Thanks for your comments! your reserach on interracial intimacies sounds very interesting, i am also in an interracial relationship, would love to hear more. and empathy is a big topic in my own research interest...maybe we could chat one day? via skype or google chat?

I find the idea of an online tool exploring interracial intimacies to be absolutely fascinating! I'd love to hear more about your project. It seems like the type of thing that might translate well for digitizing various aspects of theological study (my own research investigates theological questions at the intersections of race, gender and sexuality ... my current project being a history of the global sex trade). Would love to touch base sometime!

I have just finished constructing an online pedagogical tool that explores the history of interracial intimacies in Toronto, Canada, 1910-1950 and one of the skills I want to teach is empathy/empowerment.
