Visualizing the Rise (and Fall?) of American Newspapers

Stanford has an interactive visualization up that let's you see the rise and spread of newspapers across what became the United States, since 1690. It's a really interesting way to think about how a form and style of print--and not just the objects themselves--traveled through space. Among other things, it particularly makes me think about the role of print culture in settler colonialism (compare 1830 to 1860, for example, or 1860 to 1900).
