My name is Corey and I'm a new HASTAC Scholar. I work in the gaming industry as a reporter, going to events like PAX East in Boston to cover the industry and those who make video games. I'm very excited to read all of your blog posts and research!
Enough about me though; you can read my profile.
I want to talk about you! Do you play video games? Are you a gamer? Do you know anyone who is a gamer? Is someone who occasionally plays Candy Crush considered a gamer, or are gamers only those who play titles like The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD? What does the term "gamer" mean to the mainstream? How does gaming affect cultural issues?
These are a few questions I get asked all the time and I don't have a clear answer. The gamer label is currently under scrutiny due to a twitter hashtag. Just search #GamerGate and you will see an important debate happening online which is just now spilling over to news sites like MSNBC and FORBES. My ongoing research explores how gaming, whether you consider it just a fun past time or an integral part of life, has an impact on our culture and the outcomes of human-technology interaction, communication, and social issues such as women's rights, LGBTQ equality, and weapon/gun control.
I am excited to share what I learn among all of you and look forward to reading all of your research as well!
