Safiya Umoja Noble is a first year Ph.D. candidate and Information in Society Fellow at the University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information. She is focusing her work in social networks and community informatics. She is especially interested in the preservation of knowledge and wisdom in communities and examining technology use and innovation from the perspective of the marginalized. Safiya spent her professional career in multicultural marketing and community engagement and has worked close to 20 years on public-private partnerships between grassroots organizations, universities, companies, and African-American and Latino communities. She plans to refine her research skills in Human Computer Interaction and Community Informatics in an effort to understand the implications of race, class and gender on technology innovation. Currently, she works as the Creative Director at OJC Technologies (www.ojctech.com). She holds a B.A. from California State University, Fresno in Sociology with a minor in Ethnic Studies and did two years of graduate work at San Jose State University in Sociology with an emphasis on Critical Race Theory and Gender Studies and holds an M.S. in Library & Information Science from the University of Illinois.
