Brief Bio
I'm currently a James B. Duke Fellow in the Program in Literature at Duke University, where I research science fiction and modernity. My dissertation centers around the political uses of futurity in twentieth- and twenty-first-century American literature, film, and culture, including figurations of the Internet as a proto-Utopian space for free discourse and identity construction. I also have an MFA in fiction writing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and sometimes make use of it. I blog almost every day at gerrycanavan.blogspot.com and Twitter @gerryblog.

I am also currently co-editing a special issue of _Polygraph_ called "Ecology and Ideology" and a special issue of _American Literature_ on science fiction, fantasy, and myth, as well as co-organizing a graduate student conference at Duke devoted to "Cultures of Recession."
