HA(y)STAC(k): So What's in a Name?

It was sometime in 2002 when a bunch of us were sitting around, thinking about what we wanted to call this visionary network of thinkers (not all of them professional educators) who were frustrated by the institutional, disciplinary, and field barriers that made it difficult to think of the interactive, linked in, global, creative possibilities of the future together.
Collaboration by Difference, Yet Again

I happened to see Quantum of Solace last night and, at the dinner afterwards, with two friends and two teenage boys, we began asking lots of questions about filmic continuity, geography, and politics. This morning, I went to Wikipedia for some answers and they were all there, in this weighty entry on the latest Bond movie. That exploration led to another, and another, and another, and I began thinking more about collaboration by difference, the HASTAC model and the one, I suppose, that I'm responsible for pushing and exploring and, of course, writing about, not only in this blog but in papers and in some books that will be coming out soon. Here are this morning's thoughts on one of my favorite subjects.

You learn a lot eating three meals a day with artists, photographers, composers, poets, scholars . . . That's the Collaboration by Difference we HASTAC'ers keep harping on!

Collaboration by Difference and Affinity

HASTAC has been pushing a management and intellectual model of "collaboration by difference," since digital learning requires the coming together of many people with very different kinds of expertise. Sometimes, though, collaboration is about sharing the same goals, standards, ideals, and sense of responsibility.
