The Digital Media and Learning Conference is expected to be an annual event supported by the MacArthur Foundation and organized by the Digital Media and Learning Research Hub. With a physical office at UC Irvine and a new virtual destination—www.dmlcentral.net—the Research Hub is dedicated to supporting emerging research on digital media and learning by hosting international conferences, facilitating workshops and working groups, and bringing together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, industry leaders and others working on related projects. It also houses related research programs of the MacArthur Foundation's digital media and learning initiative. Harvard University*s Berkman Center for Internet and Society and the British nonprofit research group, FutureLab, are partnering with UC Irvine on Research Hub activities.

Digital Media and Learning at MLA, Part II (My Presentation)

Submitted by Cathy Davidson on Jan 02, 2009, 08:54 AM
This posting is a reprise of my presentation at the MLA session "Humanities 2.0: Participatory Learning in an Age of Technology" which featured three winners of the MacArthur Foundation Digital Media and Learning Competition. This is a continuation of ?Digital Media and Learning and Twitter at MLA? (http://www.hastac.org/node/1866). In the previous posting, I focused on the Twitter/Microblogging session. In this posting, I will re-enact in text my presentation, on HASTAC and on the MacArthur Foundation?s Digital Media and Learning Initiative, and then in the third posting in this series I will post on the other presentations in the Digital Media and Learning session that was chaired by Zita Nunes and featured Howard Rheingold (Social Media Classroom), Todd Pressner (Hypercities), Greg Niemeyer and Antero Garcia (Black Cloud).

I've already blogged about the MLA panel that I will be participating on that includes three winners of the HASTAC/MacArthur Foundation Digital Media and Learning competition and focuses on participatory learning in higher education.

MLA 2008 Session 468: Humanities 2.0: Participatory Learning in an Age of Technology December 29, 2008 8:30-9:45 a.m. Golden Gate 5, Hilton. I also recommend the session that DML Winner Tim Lenoir will be participating on at 7:15-8:30 PM, Golden Gate 5, Hilton, Session 421. "Digital Immigrants Teaching Digital Natives."

The HASTAC-MacArthur Digital Media and Learning Competition was announced publicly on August 15, 2007. The Competition closed October 15, 2007, with an overwhelming number of applicants. We had planned for approximately 300 applications, and received more than triple the prediction. The range and diversity were extraordinary, as we have conveyed in earlier blogs in this series. Each application was read by two initial judges, scored, and ranked. The finalist pool of 80 proposals was scrutinized and discussed in detail by 10 experts. We ended up awarding 17 stellar projects. We hail all the applicants, and heartily congratulate the winners.
