Retroblogging Myself on the Backchannel
Back eons ago (i.e. on Thurs in NC, today is Sat in La Jolla), at the CHAT Festival at UNC, John McGowan and I had a dialogue with a ferociously interesting audience on "The Future of Learning Institutions." We made a radical decision before our panel to not have prepared papers or even prepared remarks and to not use any other form of technology either. Nada. Unscripted. Unplugged.
Art out of the dark: Arne Flaten's "brave new world" of Art History in the classroom
Every spring, ten or so students at Coastal Carolina University get to experience art history in a way few students do. Rather than sitting in a dark classroom staring at slides for an hour and a half, Arne Flaten's students are experiencing art history first hand, so to speak.

Student Blogging
This semester I'll be teaching a Writing 20 here at Duke organized around Utopian science fiction from the latter half of the twentieth century: Star Trek, The Dispossessed, Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, and Dollhouse. (A longer description can be found here.) In keeping with the themes of the course that consider the digital as a possible space for Utopia, I've decided to move from the Blackboard discussion forum to a public blog housed with Duke's new WordPress project.

Using Games to Teach
I have been actively involved in the Games4Learning initiative at UNC Chapel Hill since I started the doctoral program. I love the idea of using games for teaching and learning; but how feasible is this really?
