Isolating reading, writing, and math skills from their real-world contexts for the purpose of testing them "objectively" is like asking someone if she knows how to tie her shoe, then making her prove it by writing a 5-paragraph essay describing how to tie your shoes. It's like asking someone to prove he can build a fire: But is the fire for warmth, for signaling for help, or for burning the whole house down?
