Thoughts on the Situation in California

I posted a bit on my blog this morning on the situation in California and thought it would might be something we wanted to talk about here at HASTAC as well. Here's that post, with links to some resources elsewhere on the Internet...

Submitted by fortune2 on Nov 18, 2009, 04:55 PM

The past year on the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign campus has been full of art activist projects. As an MFA candidate in New Media who is interested in work that exists in the world of art and the world of social change ,simultaneously, I have been particularly excited about this. I intend to use my HASTAC blog platform to highlight both past and current art and activist projects that have touched the UIUC campus in one way or another. First up, Oakland based artist Favianna Rodriguez and the artist collective she belongs to, Just Seeds.

Status Update Activism

If your Facebook newsfeed is like mine, endless variations on "...thinks no one should die because he or she cannot afford health care, and no one should go broke because he or she gets sick" have been scrolling down your screen all day. My kneejerk reaction to this new meme was, I'll admit, a crusty cynicism -- status updates don't have votes in the Senate -- but at the same time we should recognize that this sort of identitarian signaling behavior is an increasingly important part of what we "millennials" understand as political-cultural engagement.

It hasn't been very often, if ever, in American history that the mother of the President of the United States was a scholar and an academic.  Congratulations to Duke University Press for publishing Against the Odds:  Village Industry in Indonesia, by the late S. Ann Dunham.  Duke U Press Editorial Director Ken Wissoker notes:  ?It is a great privilege for Duke University Press to be publishing this remarkable work by Ann Dunham.  Her global perspective and obvious respect for other people?s intelligence and self-direction is a model we all can learn from. Her children clearly have!?

Politics Without Cynicism: What Would That Look Like?

he time since the election has been almost as interesting as the time that preceded it, but what I'm finding most fascinating are the news people who can't figure it out. Without the lens of cynicism with which to view the world, the world is a very confusing place for newscasters. That's because they have lived so long within the world of double-talk, they can't figure out single talk.

What About Web 2.0 Democracy?

Submitted by Cathy Davidson on Nov 07, 2008, 04:57 PM
What if all the brilliant Web 2.0 organizing and energy of the campaign could be part of democracy? What if social networks were built into governance? What if our ideas really mattered? That is idealistic, to be sure, but who ever heard of so much promise so soon. Check out http://change.gov/ and smile some more.
